Compsoc Newsletter 27th April 2013

Greetings CompSoc!

This term we’re planning for tournaments every gaming session, revision football, at least 2 programming competitions, post-exam BBQ, and two LANs (including the BFL, a LAN in Week 10 over 5 days).

WRONG: In the coming week we’re having the Exam LAN. Come along and waste precious revision hours with all the usual great people, and maybe join in with the StarCraft 2 or Counter-Strike: Source tournaments. http://uwcs.co.uk/events/details/1535/

CORRECTION: Exam LAN will be held Week 3 rather than Week 2 this term due to a room booking problem.

If anyone would be interested in going with CompSoc to Eurogamer this summer, they should contact Murtag. gaming-president@warwickcompsoc.co.uk

If anyone is interested in going to iSeries with CompSoc this summer, they can join #i49 on IRC. (See 'chatting with us’ below.)

Last March of SigmaD: Also, AGM reminder

Greetings CompSoc,

Just to remind you that our AGM is tomorrow at 7pm in S0.13. Attendance is probably compulsory if you’re running for a position.

Is there a way to vote that doesn’t involve leaving a computer I hear you ask. Why yes, there is indeed.
You can go to http://uwcs.co.uk/elections/details/2/ and vote online/cast a proxy vote. Note that if you intend to do this, you need to do so BEFORE 12:00 today(9th Feb), so the person responsible(me) has time to collate this data before the election.

There is also the Bloomberg Programming Competition this weekend, details here: http://uwcs.co.uk/events/details/1289/
There are some pretty impressive prizes to be won, as well as participation prizes, so make sure to consider coming along.

As I am not standing for election again, this is the last e-mail I will send as secretary, I hope you’ve enjoyed being told about weekly events every month or so as much as or more than I’ve enjoyed telling you.

Regards,

SigmaD (Robert Steele)

Important Gaming Message and AGM

Greetings CompSoc!

Firstly, as DCS is having an Open Day this Saturday, and the room has been left in a less than perfect state after gaming recently, there will be NO FOOD AT GAMING THIS WEEK. That’s STRICTLY NO FOOD ORDERS as well, so eat beforehand this week.

Secondly, our AGM is next Wednesday. I’ll be sending out another e-mail once the room has been confirmed, but if you’re thinking of applying for a position, please send your manifesto to secretary@warwickcompsoc.co.uk BEFORE MONDAY. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at the same address.

Exec Elections

Greetings CompSoc.

As the AGM is soon, I wanted to inform you about the elections for exec positions in the society and how to apply. I know some of you have already sent in manifestos after I announced this at LAN, don’t worry, there’s no need to re-send those (Unless you want to of course).

Please send your manifesto to secretary@warwickcompsoc.co.uk. Your manifesto should cover who you are and why you want to be elected to a position in the society. There is no limit on the number of positions you may run for, although please note that you need to be a current member (not associate member) of CompSoc to be elected.

Another e-mail will be sent out containing the date and location of the AGM when it has been arranged. Manifestos of applicants will also be posted on the website.

The positions are as follows:

Academic President (Co-President)

The role involves keep the academic activities of the society running including academic talks and technical services. Both president positions have a responsibility to oversee the budget working with the secretary and treasurer on general society matters.

Gaming President (Co-President)

The role involves keep the gaming activities of the society running including weekly gaming events and the society’s LANs. Both president positions have a responsibility to oversee the budget working with the secretary and treasurer on general society matters.

Treasurer

The role involves managing and overseeing the society’s accounts. There is a responsibility to ensure the funds are used wisely and to sign off purchases for the society.

Secretary

The role involves taking minutes from exec meetings and communicating with the Student Union and the University on behalf of the society. Primarily in order to book rooms for society events. The secretary is also in charge of various administrative tasks.

Social Secretary

The role involves planning and communicating the social activities of the society, including weekly pub events and special socials for LANs. The social secretary is also in charge of sending out newsletters to the society’s members.

Technical Officer

The role involves managing the society’s technical services. There are currently 3 servers for general purpose everyday use as well as off-site services. The technical officer acts as a communicator between the exec and the tech Team.

If you have any questions about any exec position or the application process, please e-mail me at secretary@warwickcompsoc.co.uk.

SigmaD (Robert Steele)

LAN Issues

Greetings CompSoc

We have a few messages for you about some issues which occurred during
LAN.

We are also in possession of a grey jumper which was left by Table 1 at the
end of LAN, so contact cranman if it’s yours.

Firstly, we are concerned about state of Table 3 at the end of LAN. There
was food trodden into the carpet under the tables, which made the clean-up
a lot harder to complete. Please ensure that you leave your seating area
in a clean manner, as it’s unfair on the people cleaning up at the end. We
will be monitoring this at the next LAN, with potential bans for people
who don’t keep their area clean.

We also had a few issues of people sleeping at LAN. We are not allowed by
Warwick Security to permit people to sleep at LAN for health and safety
reasons. We had people bringing camp beds into LAN. We cannot allow this
to happen, so if you’re tired, go home and sleep.

Lastly, there was a case of someone using someone else’s equipment without
having permission beforehand. There is a level of trust between everyone
at LAN, including the safety of an equipment left whilst you aren’t there.
Please don’t take something without first asking as we will have no choice
but to ask you leave LAN.

Sorry to be such a killjoy, but this is for the benefit for everyone.
